Thnews articlee real story behind making these treats.

Mildred Day graduated Iowa State University in 1928.

She first went to work for the Pillsbury Cooking School (as a member of Mary Ellis Ames staff.) In the late 30’s she went on to work for Kellogg’s.

Malitta Jensen worked for the American Honey Institute before going to work at Kellogg’s In Battle Creek, Michigan.

Mildred and Malitta did a company promotion project together for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies in 1939. They worked almost nonstop for two weeks from 6:30am until 10:30 at night, creating and perfecting the recipe for what was coined Marshmallow Squares.

The recipe was printed in newspapers in 1940. It became popular and Kellogg’s started printing it on the side of the box in 1941. The treats were hand made all across America until January 15, 1995 When the first packaged Rice Krispies Treats came out.

Now there are many stories of Mildred Day creating rice krispie treats for a Girl Scout troop called the camp fire girls. There was a marshmallow brand called campfire marshmallows. Mildred’s obituary statement in the Daily Herald. Chicago, Illinois. 16 June 1996. Page 11.  Stated that they were created for this reason but research shows otherwise.
